The drinking age is not effective in making sure that young people don’t abuse alcohol. Making sure that young people treat alcohol as a drink and not as an illegal drug would be a significant difference. If the drinking age were 18 and there were related laws to make sure that alcohol would not be abused in any situation, alcohol related traffic fatalities would decrease. The failure to teach people who are 18-20 the importance of responsibility sets up the condition for where drunk driving would be higher than if Choose Responsibilty’s program were to be enacted. Stopping the conditions for drunk driving is important and should be pursued but no cliff-hanger, a high drinking age, is part of any solution.
